Ease Into Winter with Grenache.
Before winter hits you like a Mitch Barnett high shot (hey, my first Rugby League analogy ever!), meteorologists suggest that it’s not going to be as cold and rainy as last year. And because I trust weather people with my life, I will collect my winter wines accordingly.
I have recently tasted this beauty: Gibson Wines Duke Grenache 2021. It’s perfect for the warmer winter days that we’ll definitely experience in the months to come.
Tasting
With the first sniff, you get a delightful whiff of red fruit. It’s not overbearing at all. Further, it gently reveals other notes of red and black cherries, rosehips, and wildflowers. This continues on the palate together with a bit of plum. The finish delicately lingers on with a touch of violets at the end. It is a well-structured wine. The tannins aren’t intrusive and keep everything together beautifully. It’s Weyes Blood singing When You’re Smiling. Stop your sighing. Be happy again. 😘🍷

2021 Vintage was a slow one in the Barossa. A cool end to 2020 led to mild dry ripening conditions building up to harvest. Low yields led to good varietal expression. It played right into the hands of Grenache and gave it a stylish gracefulness.
The Barossa Valley has a Mediterranean climate. It is characterised by gentle rolling hills that hold some of the oldest vineyards in the world. It’s about an hour’s drive north-east of Adelaide.
